When damage to a tooth cannot be repaired with a dental filling, inlay, or onlay, a dental crown can restore its function and appearance. Dental crowns save most of the natural tooth structure, only repairing damaged areas. This is preferable to extraction because it preserves bone in the jaw.

Some patients aren’t concerned about aesthetics because of the location of their damaged tooth; others want to prioritize a restoration that looks natural. Whatever your goals, Dr. Valente can work with you to determine the material that best meets your needs.

Types of Dental Crowns

Some of the most common materials for crowns include:

Ceramic Crowns

Ceramic crowns are an ideal option when the damaged tooth is one that is visible when you smile. These crowns match the color of your natural teeth, blending in with the rest of your smile perfectly. While they are not as strong as other options, they are typically used for teeth near the front of the mouth, which don’t need to be as strong as molars.

Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns

This type of crown has the strength of metal alloys and the natural look of ceramic for a solution that restores function and appearance to the smile. These crowns are a popular option with many patients.

Gold Alloys Crowns

Gold alloy crowns are the strongest type of crown, so they’re typically used to replace molars or for patients who have a history of teeth grinding.

Base Metal Alloys Crowns

Crowns made with base metal alloys are durable and resistant to corrosion. When there is not sufficient tooth structure to support a ceramic or porcelain crown, these types of crowns may be used instead.

The Process of Getting Dental Crowns

Getting a dental crown is a simple procedure, but it requires two separate appointments. During the first appointment, we will prepare your tooth by removing areas of damage and decay. Next, we take impressions, which help us work with skilled technicians to custom-design your crown to ensure that it fits securely and functions properly. We’ll place a temporary crown on your tooth to protect it from further damage before your next appointment.

When your permanent crown arrives from the dental laboratory, we will make sure it fits as expected, then cement or bond it to your prepared tooth. After polishing your restoration to make sure any excess bonding material or cement is removed, the procedure is complete. You can return to your normal activities and if you choose a tooth-colored restoration, no one will even know you have a crown.

Care for dental crowns involves brushing for two minutes, twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and visits with the dentist every six months, or as recommended. You can expect your crown to last for many years with proper care.
